Two Double Gold Veritas Awards for Du Toitskloof Fortified Wines
For the second consecutive year, Du Toitskloof wins a Double Gold for their infamous Red Muscadel. Another Double Gold was also awarded to their Hanepoot Jerepigo 2014 - yes, the Breedekloof indeed remains the land of raisins and honey.
The 29th annual Veritas Awards with just shy of 1500 entries this year, awarded 76 Double Gold medals to celebrate outstanding winemaking. The Fortified Wine category was awarded the most Double Gold medals and continue to build on the heritage of South African winemaking.
We’re grateful to the Dutch East India Company for sending Van Riebeeck grapevine cuttings of Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains (French Muscadel) and Muscat Alexandria (Hanepoot) back in the 17th century to help avoid scurvy among sailors - let’s just say that the initiative didn’t really heal anyone but was the best-tasting medicine in South African history!
Du Toitskloof Red Muscadel 2015 was replaced by the 2016 vintage earlier this year. After being awarded Gold at the SA Muscadel Awards the 2016 vintage was soon sold out and the new 2018 vintage was released. What an achievement to have had two vintage changeovers in one year due to popular demand. The Hanepoot Jerepigo 2014 was also awarded Gold at the SA Muscadel Awards this year.
