Syrah from the southernmost point of Africa

There are a number of factors that lead to Land's End Cape Agulhas's unique expression of Syrah. The 2020 vintage was recently awarded 94 points at the IWC (International Wine Challenge) with judges describing the wine as "Lots going on with ripe raspberries, red cherry, pepper, mocha, hints of cedar, fine and elegant, integrated tannins with very long, classy, floral, cherry finish." A mouthful of words and wine alike.

Although Land's End was the very first brand to be produced in the Agulhas Wine Triangle back in 1996, the higher tier of the brand, Cape Agulhas Range, saw its maiden vintage of the premium style in 2018 for the first time after which 2020 was released last year.

The largest influence is the region's terroir on the grapes that result in wines that are distinct from Syrah produced in other parts of South Africa or the world. Some of the factors that contribute to the uniqueness of Syrah from Cape Agulhas include the maritime climate influenced by cool ocean currents that result in a cooler and more moderate climate and a longer growing season. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complex flavours while retaining good acidity.

Another important factor is the ancient soils in Cape Agulhas. They are diverse and varied, with a mix of shale, sandstone, and clay. The region's soils have excellent water retention properties, ensuring a consistent supply of moisture to the vines. These well-drained soils, combined with the region's cool climate, contribute to the development of concentrated flavours and structured wines.

Malu Lambert writes, "Black pepper, cardamom, allspice brings to mind creaky wooden ships of antiquity, barrels spilling over with spice. The oak imparting clove and smoke. Inky black cherry, plum; luscious black fruit, scented and rich, follows on to the palate. Here, red plum joins the chorus. The fruit is abundant, bouncy, lively along a line of bright, Elim acid. Soft, juicy tannins frame all this generosity, layering and receding, implicitly elegant, a finish like salted plum."
